What Would You Do?

This week I wanted to share a situation that occurred during last weekend's Men's competition. Throughout the winter the green staff have been busy remodeling some of the bunkers and replacing the traditional stacked turf faces with artificial turf and this lead to a player's ball coming to rest on one of the lips of turf.

This created a bit of confusion at the time as to the relief to be taken and, as much as this has come up before mainly throughout the winter months when the faces can become soft causing a ball to stick in the face, there still seems a bit of confusion as to what the ruling is.

The main thing that seems to cause the confusion is players thinking the ball is in the bunker as it's stuck on or in the face, well it's not, the face of a stacked turf bunker is not part of the bunker, this is defined in the Rules of Golf Definitions at the front of the pocket sized Rules of Golf you all carry round in your bag, right?

So, what is the ruling, well as the ball is not in the bunker and is not plugged on a closely mown area the only option is to declare the ball unplayable under Rule 28. The choice of options under this rule with a penalty of 1 stroke is:

Option 1: Go back to where the previous shot was played from and replay the shot

Option 2: Drop the ball within 2 club lengths not nearer the hole, this may not be possible as the ball may still be being dropped onto the stacked turf face,

Option 3: Drop the ball behind the bunker, keeping the point where the ball lies directly between the ball and the flag with no limit as to how far back the player may go.

Click here to go to the R&A website and if you scroll down the page once loaded there is a small video of this very situation (ball embedded in riveted bunker face) which explains the relief situation very clearly.

Of course when you're out playing it's not always possible to know or get the correct ruling straight away so if in doubt play the 2 ball rule, Rule 3-3 (Doubt as to procedure) and clarify the correct ruling before entering your scores.

New arrivals

Any Fans Of Bridgestone Golf Balls?

Well we're now stocking them for this season in the for of the E6 Speed, Tour B330-S, and the Tour B330-RXS, these are a great alternative to the premium balls sold by other manufacturers. Bridgestone balls are used by some of the top players in the world on the professional tours and are big within the game in the USA. If you're not sure if you want to change from the ball you currently use or you want to change but don't know what to go for, then why not book a ball fitting session in our Indoor Studio. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes and you will be surprised the difference between some of the balls and how this affects things like trajectory, spin rates, feel and distance. I'm sure most of you have never had or even thought about getting fitted for your golf balls but if you want to get the best out of your game then surely you should be playing a ball that's going to help rather than hinder your game. Next time your down the club just pop in and talk to us about ball fittings, it really is very dimples, sorry simples!
