Any of you who watched the Solheim Cup at the weekend were no doubt disappointed, just as I was, at the final result on Sunday afternoon. The European Team certainly had the beating of the Americans for the most part and it was a shame to see the game deteriorate the way it did. Nevertheless the Americans kept on fighting till the end and got the result they wanted and as we all know, it isn't over till it's over. I'm sure the European Team are gutted they came so close but should give them the confidence that the American's are not as dominant in world golf as they used to be.
On a more local front The PGA Cup (Llandudno Trophy) was being played out in California last week by GB&I's finest Club Professionals against the American's. Played for since 1939, The PGA Cup is the Club Pros' equivalent of the Ryder Cup and this year was captained by local Professional Jon Bevan from Rhos-on-Sea. A former Cup player himself and winner of Final Qualifying for the 2006 Open at Hoylake here at Conwy, Jon managed to captain his team to a historic nail biting finish to win for the first time on American soil by just a single point. Last man out Niall Kearney holed an 8-foot putt on the last to win his match and secure the all-important 13.5-12.5 result. Great to see a local Professional doing so well.
After all the big Tour News I suppose I best mention my own team performance that took place last week at Celtic Manor. Asbri Golf, who supply a great range of accessories to me, have for the last couple of years showed their appreciation of my business with them by inviting me to play in the Asbri Cup. The Cup itself is played for by seven professionals from South Wales captained by co-Proprietor Paul against seven professionals from North Wales captained by Eryl. Although it's just a bit of fun, it's as serious as it gets when the matches start.
Day 1 started with myself and Christian Askins taking on Paul (Asbri) and Darren Griffiths (son of the snooker legend Terry Griffiths). Paul and Darren got into their stride pretty quickly despite Gareth Lewis from Harlech doing his best to put Paul off during his downswing on the opening tee shot by shouting Asbri. Each player is allowed to use two Asbri's against his opponent anywhere on the course at any point in the game which is quite off-putting as it comes when you don't expect it or you're expecting it and it doesn't come. The match progressed well and despite us getting to 5 up, we finished the match all square with Team South taking a 2.5-1.5 advantage going into Day 2.
The next morning seemed to come round far too quickly after the previous night's shenanigans, but at least the Team North boys fared better than some of the Team South with one or two looking rather weary. Big news on the day was Team North captain Eryl had managed to secure a super sub in the way of Bradley Dredge who would be taking on former European Tour player and Team South member Sion Bebb. The day for me was one of frustration as the putting gods got their own back on me from the previous day and I couldn't get the ball in the hole while my opponent, who I nicknamed '1 putt Harry', got up and down or single putted no less than eight times to beat me 4&3.
The final result was Team South taking the Cup by 7.5-4.5 with five of the singles matches going to the last hole. For me it was a great couple of days at a world-class venue and the chance to play a bit of light-hearted competitive golf, something I don't get much time to do these days.
